Most washers will have a manual release to unlock the mechanism and allow you to open the door or lid.
Washer lid locked wont open.
This is not common.
The lid lock is a default feature of your maytag front loading and top loading washer to prevent opening the appliance while the cleaning cycle is in progress.
Hold down the control lock button on your whirlpool washer for three seconds at the end of the washing cycle.
If the door or lid won t open at the end of the cycle then the lock mechanism may be at fault.
Wash media buildup detergent lint etc is preventing the lock mechanism from sliding.
Step 3 if your whirlpool washer did not unlock at the end of step 1 press and hold the end of cycle button for five seconds to manually reset your washing machine.
If it still won t budge proceed to plan b.
Make sure the door lock light is off.
Lid is not closed completely due to interference.
Fault is displayed if lid lock has not moved into locked position or motor cannot be powered.
If it opens you re all set.
Let the washer sit unplugged for about 10 minutes then try lifting the lid.
The lid lock mechanisms on some washers are heat activated which means overriding them is as simple as letting them cool off.
The lid must be completely closed and latched for the washer to operate.
Pausing the wash cycle is how it can be disabled.
Listen and when you hear the unlatching sound the door should open.
Unplug the machine for 5 minutes to let it reset and then plug it back in and give it a try.

Normally the problem is with the lock mechanism.
If the washer is paused after the water is supplied the door cannot be opened until one minute has passed.
On top load washers that lost power during a cycle it will take up to 5 minutes for the washer to unlock and resume normal operation.
If the washer door won t unlock the problem might be the main control board.
